Prabhu Nanjan - Small Tea Grower/ Tea Artisan/ Speciality Tea Taster

Started his adventures project of making Speciality Tea during 2006 when none were aware about it, even institutions in Nilgiris advised him not to try it.

He along with his brother and sister started making green tea on trial basis on small batches. They found the taste different from the one in the market and continued their experiments. In the following year the send sample packs to their friends in cities who had been drinking green tea. Their feedback was good. This made them to make more teas in batches during 2008.

In 2010 he found one of their tea plot that the growth of the plant was not really good and left the plot idle. In couple of months he noticed the difference in the buds from other tea fields. This time only buds were harvested to make white teas.

The aluminium pan was used initially for a couple of batches and then realised it was not suitable for frying tea buds and shifted to an iron pan. His teas were shared with tea connoisseur around the world, mostly to US, Canada and European countries. With their positive feedbacks he started making Yellow, Black and Oolong during 2012.

This made him to go into branding and marketing. Being a first generation entrepreneur he had lot of challenges to overcome in marketing to different cities. His biggest hurdle was that prevailing belief that Nilgiris teas were not suitable for speciality tea, even before people had tasting them. Conducted 40 events in Bangalore alone.

By 2015 he received good reviews when Elyse Petersen of Tealet came on Tea tour and shared the teas for blind tasting with Chinese tasters, where it was declared as Chinese tea. Later, Jasen Walker and Tony Gabrle reviewed the teas as promising.

COVID brought a standstill to his sales, where he had sold around 50kg in all his 5 teas per year. The price ranges from 10000 to 20000 per kg.

He had conducted around 300 training sessions with small growers in Nilgiris in making these teas. Now most of his teas go only on pre order basis.

His article was covered by different magazines.
